The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Inside Notre Dame
Basilique du Sacré-Cœur
We have visited a number of amazing churches in Paris, so we felt they warranted their own post. The architecture is undoubtedly amazing. The strange thing is, though, we both spend a lot of time in church at home, and church buildings that we frequent are obviously very different to the churches here. It is sometimes difficult to remember that these churches are built to worship the same God that we do. These ancient buildings with their high ceilings, statues, inscriptions, candle offerings and eerie silence can seem somewhat foreign to us. We don't really get all the candles burnt in offering in front of statues of Mary or other saints (and you can buy a candle for anywhere from 1 euro for a small one to 5 euros for a bigger one - does that make you more holy?) - we can see more similarity with this practice the offerings given by followers of Buddhism and Taoism. I guess it shows how Christianity has "changed with the times", and that when it comes down to it, it is much much less about 'religion', and more about what the bible says about the important guy, Jesus.
But hey, a travel blog is no place for a rant about religion. The churches are beautiful monuments, built to worship a God who warrants worship on such a grand scale.
